Why Paper Backups Fail in Busan's Humid Summers

Busan sits on the coast. From June through September, relative humidity in many apartments regularly exceeds seventy percent. Paper seed phrase backups — the most common medium we encounter — absorb that moisture quietly.

What Damage Looks Like

During verification sessions we ask clients to read their backups aloud in private. The most frequent issue is not illegibility but partial legibility: two or three words where ink has feathered or paper has yellowed at the fold. Holders often assume the backup is fine because they checked it once at creation.

Inkjet printing fares worse than ballpoint pen. Laminated paper traps moisture at the edges. Backups stored inside desk drawers near exterior walls show damage sooner than those in interior closets.

Practical Steps

Switch mediums gradually. If your paper backup is more than two years old and stored without desiccant, schedule an inspection. Consider migrating to a steel or titanium plate for primary storage while keeping paper as a secondary copy in a sealed bag with silica gel.

Control the environment. A small dehumidifier in the room where backups live costs less than one quarterly inventory session. Aim for forty to fifty percent relative humidity.

Date your backups. Write the creation date in the margin. During quarterly reviews, any backup older than three years without inspection gets flagged automatically.

When to Replace

Replace a paper backup if any word is ambiguous, if the paper feels soft or warped, or if you cannot read it under normal indoor lighting without squinting. Do not wait for an emergency to discover the damage.
